Lawyer: “Plain English makes contacts longer and the client doesn’t want to pay for a longer contract.” Hogwash! Most clearly drafted contracts usually have fewer words than the complex contracts.
While the use of legalese terms in contracts has been a long-established tradition among law practitioners, the shift to using plain English in drafting contracts, is clearly beneficial to clients. For one, writing in plain English helps clients and their negotiating partners understand a contract better and avoids potential misunderstandings in the future.
In most cases these documents (whether from lawyers or elsewhere) can be substantially simplified, written in plain English, and reduced in length without compromising their mission or effectiveness. This can mean the difference between securing a deal and losing it.

The advantages of plain English are: it is faster to write; it is faster to read; and; you get your message across more often, more easily and in a friendlier way.
Plain English is a style of writing that enables the reader to understand the message the first time they read it. It uses short, clear sentences and everyday words without unnecessary jargon. To use plain English, you may need to edit your writing several times over, or even ask someone else to read it for you.
